In Telangana, the overall number of new breast cancer cases has increased from 6900 to 7012 from 2021 to 2022. Despite breast cancer affecting the majority of women in Telangana as well as the rest of the country, early detection is extremely low. Hence, a majority of the patients live with the trauma of deformity due to detection in advanced stages.

As per the data from the largest government tertiary care cancer institute, MNJ Institute of Oncology and Cancer Center, a majority of cases are detected in the third and fourth stages of cancer, making mastectomy mandatory. While there are advanced options for breast conservation, breast reconstruction, and reshaping, these options are not widely available in the government sector.

Dr. N. Jayalatha, Director, MNJ Institute, stated that breast reconstruction is done only for patients younger than a certain age, but usually, it is advised against. She added that many breast cancer symptoms are not easily visible, making them hard to detect in the early stages. Lack of awareness and taboo about the subject also add to the problem. However, extensive campaigns over the years have led to an increase in the number of detections in the early stages.
